Until very recently retirement was retirement. Once you got to the age of 65, it was time to pack it up, go home and wait for your sunset years. Not anymore; seniors are now seeking opportunities that will keep them busy after retirement because they realize that they have so much to offer even after they officially stop being employed. If you own a business you are lucky – you can work there until you feel that you cannot offer anything more. If, however, your company forces you to retire it is time to consider other work opportunities because working after retirement comes with several benefits.

The first and most important is that it keeps both your mind and your body engaged. There is nothing like staying home day in, day out when you aren’t used to it. You may enjoy it for the first few weeks or months but before long you will start to feel like the days are long and empty. You may fall into destructive habits that don’t allow you to age well.

Another reason why seniors should keep working after retirement is that they feel useful in their communities. One of the biggest problems that seniors face today is feeling like no one needs them anymore and this can lead to depression, anxiety and health problems. If you feel that you are making a useful contribution to society you will remain psychologically healthy for many years to come.

Seniors should keep working after retirement because many of them do not have enough money saved to see them till the end. If you started saving for retirement late, you do not have enough of a nest egg to call it a day.

There are many work opportunities available to seniors. Some are turning to the gig economy so long as you have a computer and an internet connection you can join this growing group and you will be able to make a decent income. You can also look for opportunities within your community – there are many businesses and organizations that are keen to hire seniors because they come with the necessary experience and skills. If you have a friend or relative who owns a business you can also ask them to give you employment. Coming in a few times a week will keep you busy and you will be able to make some money.
